Opening
tonight were a band of four called the Big Speakers. Three
vocalists and a DJ, they played a handful of their own tracks to
a half full crowd. Whilst they might not set the world alight, their
music was well put together and they played like they were enjoying
it. A little tinkering with the bass and vocals would have helped
though, as the distortion spoilt a nice set.

Next
up, Lockdown Project, whose sound reminded me of Sublime
and early Faith No More. A larger crowd was in place to see these
guys kick off a fuller set, comprising of tracks taken from their
new album (on sale tonight, of which I purchased a copy) Certainly
a talented band with enthusiasm, a good sound and a host of songs
easy to pick up and relate to early on. A band I would definitely
try to catch again and fans of Chilli Peppers, RATM and Sublime,
should do too.
So,
onto the main act. Goldie Lookin' Chain. When I was told
they were a Welsh rap outfit, I wasn't quite sure what to expect.
Upon seeing them appear on stage, I immediately thought, "more
Morris Minor and The Majors rather than the Beastie Boys".
Opening
with songs about drinking, drugs, fighting and partying, the bad
boy image is going to appeal more to the younger music goer than
myself. On saying that though, once I had got used to the style
and them, I found the lyrics quite clever, well rehearsed and thought
out.
Judging
by the lack of people standing still and straight faces throughout
the set, it would appear that they have built up a following and
fans in the crowd were pointed out by the band for their tin foil
outfits! If they are in town again, and you don't mind the language,
go with an open mind and I'm sure you'll leave with a smile on your
face, just like I did. All in all, an enjoyable night out, even
if a little bizarre.
