Goldie Lookin? Chain are quite a sensation, at least on screen and in many cases on record too. Their brand of comedy welsh hip-hop mixes a witty social commentary with various stereotypes and take ups. The live experience could have gone either way but when you have at least 20 colourfully dressed mock-?Chavs? bounding around the stage dancing ridiculously yet still rapping rather well ? it is hard not to feel impressed and not a little caught up in the moment.
The Newport boys open proceedings with a few favourites such as Half Man ? Half Machine, which goes down a storm. As does the irreverent, humorous and extremely true ?Soap Bar?. The funny thing about the crowd is the line between audience members who are in on the GLC ?joke? and those who ARE the joke. There are people of all ages in attendance but I refer to the 12-20somthings whom are either jokingly bedecked in shell-suits and visors or seriously kitted out in those tiny baseball caps and burberry jackets. Both parties have their trousers tucked into their socks ? just to make distinguishing between them more of a fun game to be played between acts. However, the mix of people and the age range shows GLC in a good light as far as universal appeal is concerned.
The performance really is something to behold, I have never seen a stage so busy, not even at a Slipknot show. The crowd are even treated to two new cuts, presumably from their next full length. Both are catchy and receive a good response. GLC are definitely more than a one trick pony, as tonight shows with many songs receiving an even bigger response than their most well known single: ?Guns Don?t Kill People??
An encore later and the crowd are still hungry for more ? which is exactly how these jokers leave them. Good work all round from the lads and if this tour doesn?t earn them a good live reputation I?ll eat my Burberry cap.
